ThinkPad Design Exploration

2003

This award winning design exploration was created to study how a ThinkPad could reinvent the typical ergonomic relationship of keyboard and screen. The final concept transforms using a single lifting action. By coupling the display linkage and the keyboard linkage, lifting the display automatically deploys the keyboard. The concept allows for a reverse motion that returns the ThinkPad to normal position. The concept was developed in close collaboration with famed engineer Dr.John Karidis, inventor of the "butterfly" keyboard ThinkPad.

The concept is also unique in that it can be used in traditional mode or transform into the lifted position. Research suggested that choice was important. Although never taken to market, the groundbreaking concept never fails to trigger an emotional response and curiosity. The concept won the IDEA Gold Award for design explorations in 2003.
